About Us
SAWW is in party mode - and with good reason.  Even before it celebrated its third anniversary
, the group attracted over 300 members.  An average of 10 to 20 attend each of the three walks each weekend, one on Saturdays and two on Sundays, and the lively social events programme has been a real success.

Why has Surrey Area Weekend Walkers grown so quickly since its inaugural walk on 7 September 2003?  Put quite simply, the founders of Surrey's newest Ramblers’ Association group identified and addressed a significant gap in the walking market, 35 to 55-year-old singles and couples.

SAWW at Winkworth ArboretumTake Sue and Richard, for example"We decided to try out the Ramblers for all the usual reasons," says Richard.  "To enjoy fresh air, exercise and the countryside while meeting new people.  So we turned up at walks run by a couple of local long-established RA groups and had a very friendly welcome from both.  However, we soon noticed that we were by far the youngest people there.  Many of our fellow walkers were much fitter than either of us but they were from a different, mainly retired generation, our parent's generation.  Quite frankly we felt a little out of place.  Birds of a feather flock together, as the saying goes, and, perhaps sadly, this applies when choosing a group of people to spend an afternoon with.  Being too old to join the highly successful Surrey Under-40s Ramblers Group (SURG), we were on the verge of giving up on the Ramblers.  That's when we stumbled upon www.saww.org.uk and so became two of the first SAWW members."

SAWW, the very first Ramblers’ Association group targeted specifically at this pre-retirement age group, has now been joined by two others, Chiltern Weekend Walkers and Notts Weekend Walkers, and the hope is that many more will follow.

Membership of SAWW is open to RA members in the age range 35 to 55.  Existing SAWW members will be expected to transfer to an alternate RA group on reaching 60.  All members are encouraged to contribute to the group by leading at least one walk or organising a social event every year during their membership.
