About us
Surrey Area Weekend Walkers began life in September 2003 as the Ramblers’ first group for the 35-55 age group. We quickly became Surrey Ramblers’ fastest growing group with over 350 members joining before we celebrated our fifth birthday. Our members lead two or three walks each weekend and regularly organise walking holidays, mini-breaks and social events. Walks are generally between 5 and 12 miles with a turnout of 10 to 20.
The need for a 40s-50s group became clear when two of SAWW’s founders recognised the reluctance of members of the Surrey 20s and 30s group (SURG) to move on to more ‘traditional’ groups on reaching 40. They clearly preferred to walk with their contemporaries.
SAWW’s inaugural meeting was held in summer 2003 at a pub in Surbiton. Gavin Dulley recalls: "I drove there convinced that no-one would turn up”. I must have looked a bit lost because one of the bar staff asked if I was a rambler. When I said ‘yes’, she explained: ‘They're all out in the beer garden’. As I walked outside, there they were... About 30 of them! Some are still in the group to this day. The Ramblers officials approved the group then and there. A skeleton committee was formed and a walks programme drawn up. SAWW was born."
RA members in the 35 to 55 age range are welcome to join SAWW. Our members are expected to transfer to alternative RA groups on reaching 60. In common with other Ramblers groups, we need everyone to play an active part in the group by organising walks and social events.
